Thank you for your interest in our summer program for teachers. These workshops are designed for professional chemistry and physical science educators and for graduate and undergraduate students interested in chemistry or physical science education. Each workshop meets for a single weekend and counts as a one credit course for either graduate or undergraduate credit. Each course meets on a Friday evening and Saturday, the next day. Each course is offered for a fee of $75. That covers everything. There are no hidden fees.
If you are a public school teacher and take one or more of the courses for graduate credit, most school districts will award 20 Professional Development Units (PDUs) per credit. Be sure and check with your Professional Development Advisor (PDA) to make sure that you will be awarded the PDUs.
Building Your Chemistry Demonstration Repertoire This course focuses on learning new demos and demo ideas. Bring some to share. Emphasizes the performance and exchange of favored demonstrations among the participants along with analysis of why they have been effective. The UO chemistry department lecture demonstrator will perform and explain several demonstrations.
Chemistry Laboratory and Demonstration Safety This course focuses on creating and maintaining a safe environment for your students and yourself during labs and demos. Safe and appropriate storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals and equipment in the learning laboratory and prep room. Lab design and student supervision safety issues.
Classroom Demonstrations in the Chemistry Curriculum In this course we will examine how to design and present effective classroom demonstrations. Development and integration of science demonstrations into the curriculum. Covers principles of effective demonstrations and demo resources.
The instructor, Randy Sullivan, is the Lecture Demonstration Coordinator for the University of Oregon Chemistry Department. In addition to his college and university teaching, Mr. Sullivan has more than five years experience teaching high school chemistry and physical science.
