Location
The Willamalane Aquatic Center is a pool run by the parks and recreation division of the city of Springfield, Oregon. It is located in a neighborhood park at the intersection of G and 14th Streets.
History
Willamalane Pool was first built in 1951 and later covered with a shallow prefabricated dome structure in 1964. Over time, the dome began to sag and took on more of a saddle shape. The roof's uncertain fate led to poor maintenance, leaks, and finally a decision to remove the dome in 1996. The pool was then used as a seasonal outdoor facility for two summers until a city bond measure allowed the most recent construction to begin. The new facility entered service in late summer 2000.
The aquatic center is composed of two building volumes. The reception/locker room building is a low, narrow building along the South edge of the structure. The natatorium is a large space with a roughly square footprint (180 x 150 feet) and a 30 foot ceiling.
The building is constructed of CMU perimeter walls, with a tubular steel-frame truss system supporting the roof, in order to provide the clear span over the pools. There is a poured concrete slab floor.
There are two large areas of glass on the East wall, which have minimal sun-shading. Glazing is located high on the South wall, above the locker room building volume. Calwall is installed horizontally above the spa pool. There is more Calwall on the West wall, to provide some natural light. There are four pools at Willamalane. There is a lap pool, a diving pool, and an exercise pool, as well as a hot tub located at the South end of the space. The target temperatures for the water in these pools are:
- Exercise pool: 88 °F
Lap, Diving pools: 84 °F
Spa: 102 °F
