Methodology:
- Tally patrons' seated location (observational)
- Record time, day and weather conditions
- Measure the light in foot candles throughout the space (scientific)
- Take slides of the conditions
On various predetermined days we talllied where
people sat and surveyed them regarding the two or three reasons that they
chose a particular space to sit, along with recording the time and weather
conditions. Our approach was to use direct observation (specifically
noting behavior) and an informal survey in conjunction with the more scientific
light meters (which will measure illuminance in foot candles of various
areas) in order to show a correlation between the relative glare from daylight
illuminance and surface reflection and the visual comfort people seek when
selecting a seat. Therefore, our equipment needs were minimal.
We used light meters for measurements and diagrams of the space to record
the locations of customers over a period of time. We will recorded
this data at 8:00 a.m., 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. on both weekdays and weekends.
We observed during all possible weather conditions ranging from the period
following a Eugene downpour to the occasional sunny day. The collected
data was analyzed to determine patterns based on time of day and light
conditions.
Initial Data Collection:
During one of our first visits to the site we conducted an initial data collection to test our methods. After consultation with Alison Kwok and an initial look at this data we believe that our methodology is viable for the project. We also tested our survey technique in the AAA Hearth before using it at our site.
The initial data was collected on Sunday, May 7
at 11:30 a.m. under an overcast sky.
