Texts for Purchase

      UO Bookstore/ArH reserve shelves:

[n.b., some copies of these books may be found at Smith Family Bookstore]

      Vidya Deheja, Indian Art (required)
Embree, A. ed., Sources of Indian Tradition, Vol. 1 (Second Edition) (required)
Michell, The Hindu Temple (strongly recommended)

In this course we will consider the major artistic traditions of India-sculpture, painting, architecture, and gardens-in relationship to the contemporary historical and cultural contexts.

Because the material covered in this course is unfamiliar to most students, you are urged to attend class regularly and promptly and to pay close attention to the names and dates of historical periods and traditions. The primary study materials for this class include:

    1) the class lectures and the materials shown in slides;
    2) the study assignments, based on your books and supplemented by the library resources on reserve for this course in the AAA Library (Lawrence 277); and
    3) the Web-site for this course lists the class assignments and suggests questions and ideas related to the readings and the lectures. All students are expected to make use of this facility.

    4) the Image Reserve, available through the Web-site, gives you an opportunity to review core required visual materials.

This year the discussion section is optional rather than required; the reading assignments listed below will offer substantial enrichment to the course. Students should understand that the readings are a required part of the course. The readings will be developed in the course Web-site and will be integrated into the examination material.

There will be two midterms (30% each) and one final (40%) examination.

Midterm I - October 24

Midterm II - November 9

Final Exam - Friday, December 8 at 8 a.m.

No makeup examinations are given without a medical excuse from a doctor.

Oversleeping, early departure for vacation, family weddings, etc. do not constitute reasons for a make-up examination.

Examinations:
Midterm and final examinations will include both objective and subjective questions. The objective questions require visual recognition of monuments and the identification of significant individuals, periods, and traditions. Expect questions regarding the geographical location of important sites. Subjective questions will ask you for interpretative and comparative responses.

All materials for the examinations will be based on class lectures, assigned readings, and the materials available on the Course Web-site.

Please note: without a written medical excuse, there can be no make-up examinations for students taking this course.

I do not give early exams. Students planning departures for Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday, or students involved in athletic events should take this policy into careful consideration.
