The American English Institute will be known as a world-class institute for English language learning through excellent teaching and innovative, flexible, and research-based curricula. The scholarship of the AEI's faculty will be recognized worldwide. The AEI will enhance partnerships to address needs of of UO international students and faculty across departments, schools and colleges. The AEI will be a great place to work.

The American English Institute will be recognized as a world-class institute for English language learning through excellent teaching and innovative, flexible, and research-based curricula. The AEI will be a key player in fostering diversity, global competence, and life-long learning skills at the University of Oregon, addressing the needs of students and faculty across departments, schools and colleges. The AEI will become a hub for innovative scholarship on language acquisition and teaching and will enhance its visibility and collaborative partnerships within the Linguistics Department and across the University and the globe. The American English Institute will be recognized as a world-class institute for English language learning, providing international students with innovative, flexible, and research-based curricula, and a learning environment that promotes global competence and life-long learning. In so doing, the AEI will be a key player in fostering diversity at the University of Oregon. The AEI will strengthen ties with partners in Linguistics, becoming a hub for cutting-edge scholarship on language acquisition and teaching. The AEI will further its outreach across the University, providing international students and faculty/staff with appropriate language-related support and skills, as determined by ongoing needs assessment. The AEI's growing academic and professional competence through faculty professional development and research will enhance its visibility and collaborative partnerships across the University and the globe. Working with key stakeholders in and outside the University, the AEI will address its urgent short and long-term physical space needs to support its academic and service goals. Successful achievement of this vision will result in engagement with new stakeholders and partners, increasing options for future development and research. [173 words]

The American English Institute at the University of Oregon will become a beacon for English language learning by providing students with an excellent curriculum that is innovative, flexible and research based. The AEI will further diversify its students, instructors, and administrators and serve as a model for all intensive English programs by fostering a community of life long learners which will enhance the AEI's visibility and standing externally and within the larger UO community. The AEI will become the hub for language learning scholarship, engaging faculty and students in cutting edge research. The AEI will strengthen ties to the Department of Linguistics while further integrating with departments, colleges, and schools at the UO in order to provide students with the instruction they need based on an on-going assessment of student, faculty, staff, and administrative needs. The AEI will enhance its footprint on the UO campus by addressing issues related to much needed physical space. This vision will result in engagement with new stakeholders and partners, which will fuel future growth for the AEI and its research.


  1. The AEI envisions being fully integrated into the greater UO community. The AEI will foster the development of global citizens who are integrally connected across the breadth of the University of Oregon’s activities.

  2. The AEI envisions an expert faculty that drives innovation in research and curriculum.
    • The AEI envisions being a leader in English language pedagogical research. The AEI faculty will lead scholarship focused on teaching and classroom best practices, which will influence the discipline of applied linguistics. Enhanced facilities and academic support (classroom labs) will foster ongoing AEI faculty research, teacher training programs, and collaboration with other UO departments, particularly Linguistics.
    • The AEI envisions being the standard for excellent teaching and developing flexible curriculum to meet changing student needs. The AEI will provide students with the best teaching and classroom materials in the world, developing and offering a motivating, holistic language learning environment, with programs both in and out of the classroom. The AEI will remain engaged in supporting lifelong language development for their learners.
  3. The AEI envisions a diverse student/learner community. Innovative enrollment management practices, reaching out to a variety of countries and funding sources, will further diversify classroom composition. Diversity will enhance the educational experience and ensure a stable enrollment over time.
  4. The AEI envisions serving as a beacon/hub/core provider for English language training and teacher development, on the U.S. west coast and across the globe. The AEI will inspire top-notch English language learning models among IEPs, and in inter-cultural language classrooms throughout the world. Our stakeholders will seek engagement with us, and interact with our virtual/physical community of English language educators and global thinkers.
