The AEI is affected by mandates originating from both inside and outside the institute.  The phrase "internal mandates" here refers to requirements imposed from within the UO, whether by the AEI itself, the university, or its colleges and departments.  The AEI must ensure that the path charted to the future takes into account many of these disparate concerns.  

First and foremost, the AEI is responsible to follow the mission of the University of Oregon. The institute must also comply with mandates from schools as diverse at law, business, education, the College of Arts and Sciences and the various departments that make it up, including mandates from AEI’s home at the department of linguistics. Mandates also come from the university’s human resources department and provost that relate to areas like resource allocation, staffing, and promotion. Further mandates are also imposed by union contracts.  

Faculty and staff are also compelled by many mandates internal to the AEI, including areas related to curriculum and curricular development, assessment, office assignments, office hours, classroom scheduling, etc., much of which is also tied to program accreditation.  AEI faculty, staff, administrators, and students are also responsible to follow various codes of ethics established by the university. In addition to these codes, the AEI must follow public safety and risk management policies. The AEI must also follow mandates from UO’s offices of admissions and diversity related to enrollment levels and the make-up of the student population.  The university’s IT policies also mandate items ranging from ethical computer use to integration into Banner. Further mandates from ORSA, SRS, and UO legal counsel must be followed.  Finally, the AEI follows fiscal mandates that come from various UO departments, CAS, CASIT, and the University of Oregon provost.
