Brief Introduction
Hendricks Park is Eugene's oldest city park. The majority of the
land was acquired in 1906 from a donation by the Hendricks family.
The park covers 78-acres of forested ridgeline that extends from the south hills of Eugene. It
provides habitat for a variety of native plants and animals. The size of
the park makes it a significant reserve of natural biodiversity within
city boundaries. In recent years many Douglas-fir trees have fallen from
strong windstorms. This along with other issues created concern about the health of
the park's forest. In 1999 the Eugene City Council established an
advisory committee and hired an ecology consulting firm, Salix &
Associates, to help
develop the Hendricks Park Forest Management Plan. This
management plan focuses on protecting and restoring the park's biological
integrity and relatively isolated ecosystem from a growing number of invasive plant
species. These non-native plants compete for space, sunlight, and
nutrients that the native species require and dramatically reduce plant
diversity.
The
University of Oregon Environmental Studies' Service Learning Program
(SLP) teams up with local non-profit groups and local government agencies to
accomplish environmental related projects. This website is here to
present the work resulting from a cooperative effort between SLP and the City of Eugene's Public Works Parks and Open Space
Division working on important issues at Hendricks Park. For a
better understanding of this project, please view our project development
