Encroachment Study of Herb RobertIntroduction: In addition to studying the effects of control methods for invasive species Herb Robert and Nipplewort, the park staff is also interested in how quickly these invasive non-natives will encroach into the forest after ivy removal. Data Collection ö The table and graphs below illustrate the depth that Herb Robert was found along transects walked into the forest from road and trail edges. The sites were chosen in high and low traffic areas of the park, and for the remoteness of the depth of the site. The furthest point within the site, 20 meters in, had to be at least 20 meters away from an existing trail or roadway. As you can see from the graphs, Herb Robert is present further into the interior of the park than thought. It was believed that Herb Robert was limited to within the first 10 meter edge along trails and roads. These results will help the park staff adjust protocols for future studies, possibly increase depth or data collection methods.
Note: Scale on graphs
below are in meters (m) Transects in site 1 and 2 were selected randomly and will be randomly in subsequent data collections. Transects in site 3 were selected randomly, and these same transects will be revisited in coming months to look for further encroachment.
