Spring trip to southeastern Oregon, including Malheur Wildlife Refuge and Alvord Desert

We are considering a Eugene Natural History Society field trip to southeastern Oregon sometime in May 2004. Our tentative plan is a 3-day trip, leaving on a Thursday around midday, returning the following Sunday. We would spend Thursday traveling to the first night’s lodging, Friday birding the central patrol road on Malheur Refuge, Saturday on a loop around the east side of Steens Mountain to Alvord Desert, and Sunday on the return trip to Eugene. Transportation would probably be by carpool. Lodging would most likely be a motel in Burns, or perhaps at the Malheur Field Station if space is available.

Final scheduling of this trip will depend on the level of interest. Please contact Tom Titus by phone (484-4477) or email (titus@darkwing.uoregon.edu) should you wish to express your enthusiasm!
All Out For the Bird Count

Now is the time for all those interested in birds to sign on for the annual Christmas Bird Count. This event is sponsored by the National Audubon Society, has been conducted every year for 103 years during the last half of December. Participation has grown to involve 1000's of people all over the country. Counts are made inside a 15 mile diameter circle. Eugene's circle is centered in the Danebo area. It is divided into 23 segments each of which is assigned to a team of observers with an experienced birder in charge. Volunteer counters are assigned to a team and spend a substantial portion of the day assessing the bird population within their territory. We determine species and numbers of individuals. Results from all counters is compiled and sent to Audubon. The information is available to anyone who wishes to use it in any fashion.

Eugene's count will be held on Sunday January 4, 2004. Good weather has been requisitioned. At the end of the day we get together at the Eugene Garden Club for a chili feed (vegetarian and meated types) with accompaniments. If this sounds enticing call Herb Wisner (at 344-3634) to ask to be included.

Do you feed birds in your yard? We encourage home counters too. They play an important part in the count. Most of the Anna's Hummingbirds show up at feeders. And, in case the good weather doesn't arrive on time, you will not suffer from what does show up.

NOTE: We also can use some help putting on the chili feed at the Garden Club following the count. Volunteers for preparation about 4PM would be welcome.
