Escalators are a great convenience, but what do they cost us? Regardless of how much energy it takes to move one person one story, most escalators run during all business hours. For our case study, we explored how much time the mall escalators at the Valley River Center were being used, directly reflecting what percentage of the energy put into the escalator is wasted on a daily basis. We hypothesized that the escalators were being used less than 50% of the time and our final projection showed that, on average, the escalators were only being used 38.3% of the time. Over half the energy put into the escalator is being wasted. We researched possible solutions to preserve or use less energy.
