About This Print

In this print, Kitaoka showcases a "skunk cabbage" on the high moors and peatlands in Hokkaidō's Sarobetsu wilderness. Through the rain we see Mount Rishiri, a stratovolcano on Rishiri Island off the coast of Hokkaidō in the Sea of Japan.

There are three distinct states of this print, as shown below, with the 3rd state having a number of color variants.

This beautiful print was turned into a porcelain mural (as shown below) by the ceramics manufacturer Iwao (Iwao Jiki Kogyo Co.., Ltd.) in 1990 and hangs in the Town Hall of Horonobe, Hokkaidō.

Sarobetsu Plain and Mount Rishiri (Rishirifuji)

The Sarobetsu plain in northwestern area of Hokkaidō is a vast peatland in a low-lying moor covering 77 square miles. It forms part of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. Within the park is the Sarobetsu Wilderness Flower Garden which supports over 100 plant species including skunk cabbage

Mount Rishiri is a Quaternary stratovolcano located off the coast of Hokkaidō, Japan in the Sea of Japan. It rises out of the Sea of Japan forming Rishiri Island. Because its cone shape resembles Mount Fuji it is sometimes referred to as Rishiri Fuji. It is one of the 100 famous mountains in Japan.
