Mt. Ishizuchi
East of the city of Matsuyama is Mt. Ishizuchi ("Stone Hammer"), at 6,502 feet.  It is the tallest peak in western Japan and one of Japan's Seven Holy Mountains, where kami alight to restore vitality to the land. It is said to protect the city of Saijo to its northeast from typhoons. Dedicated to gongen (deities with both Shinto and Buddhist forms), Mt. Ishizuchi is a pilgrimage site during the summer climbing season.Â
