About This Print
This print illustrates story number 4 (四) in volume 2 (二巻 ) of the six volume textbook Brocade Pictures of Moral Education issued in 1883 and 1884 as primary school instructional texts. In this scene we see the great Taoist Zhang Yuchū (1361-1410), preaching to an attentive audience. Yuchu's writings "stress the compatibility of Taoism and Confucianism" and emphasize "the proper moral conduct of Taoist priests" who should serve as "effective models for the lay public."1
The Ninety-Two Print Series "Brocade Pictures of Moral Education"
In October 1883 a set of at least ninety full color oban-size prints, designed by students of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) were issued by the publisher Tsuji Keiji 辻敬之 and his publishing house Fukyūsha 普及舎 as supplements, or accompaniments, to the six volumes of instructional textbooks. Many of the prints issued were based upon Yoshitoshi's black and white illustrations in the texts. Each of the full-color prints carries the same title as the textbooks, Brocade Prints for Moral Education (Nishiki-e shūshindan 錦絵修身談) and each print also references the volume number, story number and page number of the portion of the text it is illustrating.
For more information on these prints and the textbooks, and pictures of all ninety-two prints, see the article Brocade Pictures for Moral Education.
