Summer

1957

Color woodblock print with embossing on paper
Lent by Irwin Lavenberg, L2017.103.17

Bright, primary color is rarely seen in Takahashi’s pre-1965 work, his palette being limited to the soft grays and browns associated with his chosen muse, the ancient city of Kyoto. But this print comes alive with a brilliant burst of yellow sunlight. Takahashi varied the title of this print, with some impressions titled “Summer” and others titled “Seaside”.

All of his prints bring to mind the season, whether or not they are titled as such.
