About This Print

One of twenty posthumous large-format prints created between 1978-19801 by the Kyoto publisher Kyoto Hanga-In, after earlier Yumeji illustrations.  These large-format prints are part of the series titled Takehisa Yumeji moku-hanga shu 竹下夢二木版画集 (A Collection of Takehisa Yumeji's Pictures in Woodblock Print).

Whether outdoors or in, Yumeji's girls always seem disassociated from their surroundings - lost in their own melancholy.  In this scene one can imagine the breakup that has just occurred.

This print is titled after Tolstoi's play The Living Corpse written in 1900 which tells the story of a "worthless husband's failure and final sacrifice."2

1Daiwa Shinagawa, President of Kyoto Hanga-In, confirmed the publication date for this print as between 1978-1980 in response to my inquiry made on May 1, 2012. She also confirmed that the series consisted of 20 prints.
