About This Print
Likely a self-printed and published work by Tokuriki, presenting a view from almost underneath the Sanjō Bridge, which crosses Kyoto's Kamo River, out towards the Shijo Ohashi bridge.
The Artelino website titles this print Sanjō Bridge in Sunset Glow and notes "Walking beside a bridge you see the beautiful red sky, painted by the light of the evanescent sun." The description is likely taken from the original presentation folder for this print.
As with many of Tokuriki's self-printed works, this print exists in at least one other state using slightly different color shades, as shown below on the left, and a similar view of the bridge presented in a horizontal oban format also exists, as shown below on the right. In discussing the oban version of this print, curator George Kuwayama, notes "Tradition is strong in Tokuriki's work, and compositional analogies to Hiroshige are evident in the Sanjō Bridge. But despite his traditionalism, he is a modern print master. His palette is Fauvist and the strong, expressive lines are gouged with a knife to produce jagged contours."1
