Varieties of the Japanese Print, Volume 1

by Yoshida Tōshi, 1967

Yoshida Tōshi (1911-1995)

IHL Cat. #2145

About This Book

Volume 1 of a planned two volume instructional book illustrating various stages and techniques of Japanese woodblock print creation.  For the book, Yoshida carved twenty woodblocks to illustrate, as he states in the books foreword (reproduced below), most traditional and some modern techniques of woodblock print production.

While the afterword mentions a future volume that will "cover some other important varieties of the Japanese print", it was never issued.

Foreword

This book has been compiled to illustrate varieties of the Japanese print with real hand printed examples. With a view to presenting as many different materials and methods as possible, the author has designed 11 prints specially for this purpose, using 11 different kinds of block and 12 kinds of Japanese paper.
This covers most of the traditional techniques and some of the modern techniques which are suitable for production of multiple copies.
The reader who requires detailed information about the tools and processes involved may refer to the indicated pages of "Japanese Print Making" by Tōshi Yoshida & Rei Yuki (TUTTLE) which gives full explanations of both traditional and modern techniques of relief printing.
