Week 1 - Overview & Imaging
Course objectives & logistics; IMAGING: Pixels vs. vectors, Photo-correction, Selection sets, Collage (show examples of site annotation)
Oct 1 Large-group activity: Fix a photo, Alter an architectural drawing, upload it

Tutorial / Homework: Scan an architectural drawing, use Photoshop to create material and color variations

Week 2 - Web Communications
Web definitions, basic technologies and applications
Oct 8 Large-group activity: Download the template, edit text, upload; add text as time allows

Tutorial / Homework: Customize web graphics to create a self-introduction, including links to favorite architectural websites. (optional rollover)

Week 3 - Modeling intro
Geometric Transformations: Vector graphics, Primitives and transformations, context of decorative screens
Oct 15 Large group activity: copying and rendering simple geometric forms

Tutorial / Assignment: Geometric Screen with simple rendering

Week 4: Discovering Form
Boolean operations and carved space, inserting segments and shapes into planes
Oct 29 Large group activity: Eiffel tower Boolean, generating spatial variations from a plan,

Tutorial / Assignment: 2D sketch into 3D pavillion, hand-drawing over perspective view.

Web Communications
 

Week 5: Image Design Collaboration
FormZ Review, Collaboration; Abstraction, & contextual juxtaposition for design
Oct 22 Large-group activity: Pinup discussion, FormZ and Photoshop skills

Tutorial / Assignment: CitySigns virtual team with German students. Work with a remote partner to create alternative versions of German landscapes, collage into map or landscape. Communicate using Web postings, e-mail and chat .

Modeling & Rendering

Week 6: Rendering Light
Views, Materials, light
Nov 4: Large group activity: Collaboration discussion, Render beach balls, temple building

Tutorial / Assignment: Render a building model or stage set at daytime, dusk and night

Week 7: Organizing Model Information
Layers, objects, symbols
Nov. 11 Large group: Create, insert and explode roof truss symbols

Tutorial / Assignment: Develop room model with structure (optional downloaded furnishings) .

Week 8: Presentation
LAYOUT: Graphic Design principles, presentation process, creating plans & sections
Nov 18 Large group: save a FormZ plan in Illustrator format, use Illustrator to fix the graphics

Tutorial / Assignment: PRACTICAL Test in tutorial session, WEB Portfolio

Week 9: Context
Tools for architectural practice Tues Nov. 26, 8:00-10:00am in 204 Condon, Help session Wed Nov. 27, 9:30-11:30am 4th floor studio (Thurs-Mon sessions cancelled for holiday)
PORTFOLIOS DUE WED Nov. 27, grading will start at end of Thanksgiving holiday

Week 10: Help Sessions
Help sessions Wed Dec. 3 - Tues Dec. 10 at 3:30 pm in the 4th floor studios

Week 11: Poster Review
MANDATORY PINUP Wed Dec 11 in 141 LA at 8:30-10:00am: Create a poster showing a plan, section and 3D view of a room or simple building (spatial comp, studio project or historical precedent) Option to either do an 11x17 high-res color OR a large plot either B&W or color.
