Recycling
Heat:
When the new Recreation
Center was built around the existing pool, metal coils were placed
inside the ventilation system. Because the pool water is kept at
a constant 82 degrees, the air becomes warm and moist. Due to state
regulations, some of this air must be pumped out and replaced with
fresh, outside air. Rather than losing all of that potential heat,
designers decided to utilize this moisture, or "recycle"
it to use elsewhere in the building. Thus, the metal coils capture
this moist heat and use it to warm up incoming air for other parts
of the building. Similar systems are used in both locker room showers
as well.
