Steve Mital
I am the founder and co-coordinator of the Environmental Leadership Program and have more than ten years of experience developing and managing experiential learning programs. My tasks include developing the ELP curriculum, training and supervising students, working with clients, and fundraising.

I hold a master's degrees in Community and Regional Planning and Environmental Studies.

Meghan Murphy

I am a second year Master's student in the Environmental Studies Program. Before coming to the UO, I worked as research technician on a water quality project at Notre Dame. My thesis research focuses on oak savanna restoration in the Willamette Valley. This year I managed the Turtle Habitat Monitoring Project.

Angela Bliss

I am a geography major focusing in environmental geography and geographic information science, and also working towards minors in both business and environmental studies.  I have spent the last year working as a research assistant in the geography department’s paleoecology lab where I have been measuring and cross dating a series of Douglas fir cores to be used in research regarding climate change.  My main interest in this project is for field work experience and learning to use GPS equipment as well as observing (in the hopes to improve upon!) the practical use of GIS in environmental research.

I am a junior at the U of O majoring in Environmental Studies and Sociology with an interest in social environmentalism and environmental politics. After graduation I plan on either joining the Peace Corp. or attending graduate school. I was born and raised in central Texas and have always had a desire to work with nature, so Oregon was the perfect fit. I love playing the guitar and singing and enjoy any activity that involves being outdoors, especially if it involves breaking a sweat. I joined the ELP program to gain some hands on experience in data collection and field work and look forward to continuing such efforts. Turtle Power!!!

Emily Moore

I was born and raised here in Eugene, Oregon.  I am a junior majoring in environmental studies with a business minor.  This project was my first experience with field work and it was a great experience that will prove to be very valuable in the future.  I am graduating early this August then moving to Colorado for graduate school.  I plan on continuing my environmental studies while emphasizing on sales of alternative energy.

I am an Environmental Studies major originally from eastern Canada. My love for nature supercedes anything else, therefore the preservation of wildlife areas are one of my passions. Environmental justice goes along with this, as well as animal conservation and education. I have been a self-employed gardener for over 7 years and this botanical knowledge I feel has allowed me to see the intricate connection between plant and animal relationships. I joined the ELP project to learn more about data collection techniques and to acquire hands on field experience. I’m excited to be a part of this project since turtles need all the help we can give them.

I am a senior (soon to be super senior) majoring in Environmental Science and Geography. After four years of classrooms, lectures and books, I was desperate to get my hands dirty and develop some practical field-based skills. The turtle team gave me the opportunity to stomp around the forest, wade through streams, hike up mountains and even handle real live turtles! I’m glad that I could play a part in the restoration of this critically sensitive but seriously awesome species!

Spencer Johnson

I am a senior in the Environmental Science program interested in the numerous and varied strands of ecology. My involvement in this project stems from a particular interest in applied ecology--from the field, through analysis, to policy. The Western Pond Turtle project offered a fantastic chance to meld a desire to apply the concepts and skills I have gained throughout my education and contribute to the welfare of the enduring WPTs.

I am an Art Major/Business minor and plan  to double major with Environmental Studies. I am from Boulder City, NV, just outside of Las Vegas. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, biking, working out, running, painting, all sorts of arts and crafts, cooking, playing with my kitty, traveling, wakeboarding, just being outside in the sun. I also value spending time with family, friends, animials and love meeting new people.

I’ve just returned to the University of Oregon after receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in biology three years ago to earn another Bachelors in Environmental Science.  I feel this will give me a chance to focus on the policy and processes that are associated with the science in the restoration and conservation of degraded ecosystems.  This project has given me an opportunity to work with a diverse team of people all working toward the common goal of helping to facilitate some needed steps in returning this critically sensitive species to healthy status.  I have enjoyed the opportunity to work in the field collecting data that will be used to protect such a deserving species like the Western Pond Turtle (the chillest turtle in the northwest!!!).

I am a junior majoring in Environmental Studies with a minor in Business. I am interested in learning and experiencing everything I can and gaining anything from it. I realized I wanted to participate in the turtle monitoring project because I enjoy the outdoors and I wanted to learn about something different and exciting.

I am majoring in Geography with a minor Environmental Studies.  I am interested in working with a non-profit environmental organization, or Tribal Nation in the Pacific Northwest on restoration projects that will contribute to the long-term change and stability of our natural environments.  My interests in recreation include fishing, basketball, and being outdoors whenever possible.  I enjoyed working with and on the turtle project with my team members.  With previous science related courses  I was able to relate this knowledge to our turtle project.
