About This Print

This print was created for the jin (coterie magazine) HANGA (Print Art), Volume 14, issued in 1928 by the Hanga-no-Ie institute.  It provides a somewhat bleak landscape of Iizuka in Fukuoka Prefecture about an hour from Fujimori's birthplace in Kurume.  Iizuka is in the valley of the upper Onga River. The city developed as a mining center with the opening of the Chikuhō 筑穂 Coalfield and a railway from Wakamatsu (now in Kitakyūshū) in the 1890s. The mines were gradually closed after World War II. Iizuka is now a commercial center and railway hub for the upper Onga valley.

Published by Hanga-no-Ie in Kobe under the direction of Yamaguchi Isayoshi, HANGA made its appearance in February 1924 and sold to subscribers for 80 sen each.  Sixteen quarterly issues (numbers 9 and 10 combined) were published until April 1930.  Merritt estimates that there were no more than 300 subscribers. As announced in its Table of Contents (see below), the purpose of the magazine was "to publish, exhibit, and encourage appreciation of sōsaku hanga."

Originally issued in folders, later editions were distributed in printed envelopes, as shown below. Each set contained about 10 prints mounted on backings of uniform size.  Seven or eight prints in each set were hand-printed with the remainder reproductions.

While Merritt writes that the only written content was the table of contents, Volume 14, one of the last issues, had extensive text printed on the back of the page each print was mounted to. (See images for this collection's print, above.)
