The Decorum of Gekiketsu

[A minister of state in China's Spring and Autumn Era (770-476 BC) observes the poor farmer Xi Que (Gekiketsu in Japanese) and his wife treating each other with great respect, as if they were each other's guest.  When the minister told the king, the king appointed Xi Que to an important position in the state of Jin. Xi Que would go on to successively higher positions.]


About This Book

Volume three of a six volume set of moral instruction textbooks designed for young children titled Nishiki-e shūshindan 錦絵修身談, Brocade Pictures for Moral Education. Each volume contained from one to three color woodblock prints by one of the most popular artists of the time Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) who also designed the black and white illustrations that accompanied the short stories written by Yamana Tomesaburō, based upon the morally illustrative actions of adults and children from Japan, China and the West.

This volume contains two color woodblock prints by Yoshitoshi titled The Chastity of ShihinoShinasa 四比信紗の貞 and The Decorum of Gekiketsu 郤缺(ゲキケツ)の礼which are shown below along with the all the pages in the textbook.  This volume contains twelve short stories and four black and white illustrations.
