About This Print
Advancing under heavy fire, undaunted by personal danger, Captain Matsuzaki is portrayed charging ahead of his men. Leading his soldiers to the battle of Songhwan, Captain Matsuzaki was ambushed and shot through the leg. Struck by another bullet in the head, he is reported to have shouted, “I’ve been hit!” and to have died bravely.For other depictions of the captain see this collection's prints:

This print, as opposed to almost all other Sino-Japanese War prints, was published in Ōsaka rather than in Tokyo. Its publisher Ōbuchi Wataru of the publishing house Hatsubai Shinshindō was primarily a book publisher and this print was part of a twelve print gafu (picture book), a portfolio titled Sino-Japanese War Picture Book, the envelope for which is shown below.
