dahungwho'-dun' do'n
a long time ago
wiwhchwił-dung'
when I was young
bicycle
'ulye:
it is called a "bicycle"
miq'it
on it
na:'iwha'-ne'in
I used to ride

A long time ago, when I was young, I used to ride a bicycle.
haya:ł
and
'iłwa'k'iliwh-ch'in'-tah
to the store sometimes
te'iwha:wh
I would go
haya:ł
and then

And I would I would go to the store sometimes, and...
hay tin
the road
misGiy'ts
small
ning'ay-q'eh
it goes along
yiduqi
up
haya:ł
and so

There was a little trail that went up along there, and then...
hayah
there
whił xa:se'inła:t*-e:
I would ride it up
hay nikya:w ning'a:-ch'ing'
to the main highway
haya:ł
then

I would ride it to the big highway and then...
*Literally, 'with me - it would run up'.
hayi-q'eh
that way
na:te'iwhda:wh
I would come back
na:yida:ch'ing
back down
haya:ł
and

I would come back the same way from the store. And...
łah
one time
xo'ji
very
xonse:l
it was hot
haya:ł
and

One time it was a really hot day, and...
keh
[how about]
'iłiwa'k'iliwh-xw
to the store
na:wha'
I'm gonna go
ne:se'n
I thought
haya:ł q'ut
so
te:sehłta:tł'
[I pedaled]
de:-xw
[this way]
yiduqi
up
whił wilda:l*
I was going

"How about I go to the store?" I thought, and so I pedaled this way up the trail.
haya:ł hayah-mił
[and then]
je:nah-nehwa:n
sort of slanted uphill
ya:na:ng'a:-xw
it goes up
'unt'e:-ne'ing
it was like
haya:ł-ts'eh
and I felt
jahda:
too
'uloh
it's hot
haya:ł
[and then]

And then it was like it kind of got steeper as it went up, and I felt overheated, and then...
keh
[how about]
łah-xw
just
tiwhmahs
I'll roll it along
ne:se'n
I thought
hay miq'it
[on it]
wiwha:l
[I go along]
haya:ł
and so
na:na:whdiyay
I got down off it

"How about I just roll what I'm going along on?" I thought, and then I got down off it.
haya:ł
and
te:sehłma:s
I started rolling it

And I started rolling it.
haya:ł
and
hay wiwhma:sil
my rolling it along
ne:ji-xw
right in the middle of it
'ungya'
I realize
ting
really
'a:k'ide:n'
it was making noise
daywho' xowh
something

And right in the middle of rolling it along I realized something was making a big noise.
haya:ł
[and then]
ła'ay-xw q'ut
all of a sudden
'aht'in-din
everywhere
k'iqo:n-xw
a rustling sound
wing'a'
[it became]
diydi gya'awh whung
what is it
haya:ł
and
ne:ył'e'n
I looked at them
na:ya:de'e'tł'
they are standing there
kin
trees

And then all of a sudden there was a real loud rustling sound everywhere. "What is it?" (I thought), and I looked at the trees standing there.
diywhe'eh
nothing
xo:'oh
[any way]
do: 'a:t'ing
it wasn't happening
haya:ł
[and then]
nin'i
ground
q'in'
[also]
do: ma'a:diłchwit
it isn't moving itself

There wasn't anything happening, and it also wasn't an earthquake.
haya:ł
so then
na:de:-xw
off to the side
na:te:y'e'n
I looked
de:di 'ungya'
I realize
hay k'isxa:n
the tree
ła'ay-xw q'ut
all at once
diywho'owh
something
yiłts'is-nehwa:n
it seemed like it is shaking it
la'ay-xw q'ut
just
hay miq'it-xw
on it
'unt'e:-ne'in
it was
mitł'ow'
it's leaves
'aht'in-din
[everywhere]
ła'ay-xw q'ut
just really
łe:dimil
they're hitting together
nikyah-xw
really [big]
'a:k'ine:
it is loud

So then I looked off to the side and I realize all at once that it's like something was shaking the tree, all at one time the leaves on it were hitting together everywhere and making a lot of noise.
haya:ł
and
tsit
for a moment
ne:ył'e'n
I looked at it

And then I looked at it for a moment.
haya:ł
[and then]
ła'ay-xw q'ut
just all at one time
do: no:na:di'a:n
it didn't slow down
hayi-xw
[that way]
'a:t'ing
[it happened]

And it didn't even slow down or nothing.
haya:ł
[and then]
hayi-ma:n
[for that reason]
'a:ne:se'n
I thought
k'iye:
more
do:-xolin-me:diwhdin
I don't want it
niwh'e:n
I look at it

And then because of that I thought, "I don't want to look at it no more."
hayi-ma:n
[for that reason]
tin
road
yiduqa-din
up to it
te:sehłma:s
I rolled it
haya:ł
so
xowh do'ng
I don't know
xo:' 'ułtsah
[how long]
'ahdiyah
it happened
hayi-xw
that way
do:-tah
maybe
xowh do'n
[I guess]
winda'
it stopped
whe:
I
yo:w-xw
away
xe'e:yay-ma:n
because I went away

For that reason I rolled it (bicycle) up to the road, so I don't know how long it did that, maybe it stopped because I left.

[JS speaking]: Okay, do you want to give a little translation of what you just said?
Ok, I used to ride bicycle, about every day when I was a teenager.

And I used to go through this field, there was a skinny trail that went up to the main highway.

And so I'd go from our house up to the gate, through the gate, and through that field, up to the main road then I'd go to the store the post office then I'd come back the same way.

And this one time it was a very hot day, it was probably middle of July or something.

And I was riding my bike up through there, I know it was... the air was so hot, it was like driving through the oven.

And I got up there to where the road had kind of a incline and it goes up a little higher, more steeper.

And I thought, "No it's too hot, I'm going to roll my bicycle up to the main road then it'd be easy from there.

And so I got off the bike and I started rolling the bicycle.

And as I'm going to the trees there I hear this really loud rustling noise, I thought, "What is that?" and I looked all around I thought maybe it was birds overhead or something.

The ground didn't shake, all the trees off to my left are just standing there, there's no nothing, no breeze or anything.

Then I looked off to the right and that one tree that's standing there was just shaking.

I mean, it was vibrating.

And the leaves on it was just all hitting each other shaking and it just was really loud.

And I stood there and looked at it for a while.

And I thought, no.

I guess subconsciously I'm thinking it's not happening.

That way I'm not afraid and I don't have no fear of it so...

I roll my bicycle on up to the road and went on my way, so...

I don't know if it stopped shaking when I walked away or whether it kept on shaking after I can't tell you that.
