Abstract

Case Study in Sustainable Design
This study investigates the automated lighting system at North Clackamas High School. The new high school, completed in 2002, uses a number of techniques to enhance energy efficiency. Despite the measures taken, the school has found that they are using more energy than anticipated. Is it possible that this is because of the lights being on when the classrooms are unoccupied?

In monitoring the electric lighting, the lights were on overnight in two of four classrooms once during a two-week testing period. Temperature readings seemed to indicate that the heating system is coming on at around 1:15 am, 6 mornings each week. Also, lighting data indicated that the lights were dimming more in the brighter south facing classrooms, as expected.
