| bhakti |
Devotion to the gods, expressed in rituals and hymns expressive of love.

| bijas |
Sacred syllables repeated during Hindu rituals.
|
| boddhisattva | Enlightened Being, or a Being of Wisdom; one who has reached enlightenment but stays in the world to help others.
|
| brahmans |
The members of the highest, or priestly class; emerged during the Vedic period.
|
|
Chandragupta Maurya |
Father or grandfather of Ashoka; established the Mauryan Empire by the late 4th c. BCE; reigned c.322-298 BCE
|
| chaitya |
(caitya) Refers most fundamentally to the horseshoe-shaped window characteristic of early Indian architecture; comes to refer to the Buddhist worship halls associated with Theravada and Mahayana traditions.
|
| chakra |
A wheel; comes to be associated with the Dharma Chakra or the Wheel of the Buddhist Law.
|
| Chandra |
A yakshi associated with fertility; she is represented as kicking the trunk of the Asoka tree to bring it into bloom.
|
| Chakravartin |
The Divine Ruler, or World Ruler, in early Buddhist conceptions; comes to reflect the ideal ruler.
|
| char-bagh |
A 'four-square' garden, adopted from Central Asian garden design traditions during the Islamic period.
|
| chattra |
The multi-tiered umbrella at the top of a stupa; becomes the source of the multiple layers of the pagoda.
