Terminology
"S"

sahn The courtyard of a mosque, where people gather to study and pray.

salabhanjika A yakshi who brings a tree into bloom with a kick of her foot; includes Chandra yakshi.

sanghati Monastic robe, typically a loose cloth wrapped around the body and over one shoulder.

Shakti The female principle of Energy.

Shakyamuni The name of the prince who would become the Buddha; full name = Gautama Shakyamuni.

shastra Scriptures, or texts, as the Silpa Shastras or texts encoding the tradition of temple building.

shikhara The square-based tower characteristic of a southern Hindu temple.

Shiva (Siva) One of the three main gods of Hinduism; probably quite ancient in inception, going back to his form as Rudra. Shiva is frequently represented in terms of his three main aspects: creator, maintainer, destroyer.

shudras Members of the fourth class to emerge in the Vedic period; included labourers, servants, agriculturalists.

Siddhartha The name of the prince who would become the Buddha; also known as Gautama Shakyamuni (Sakyamuni); born c. 556 BCE

Surya The Sun God, said to be an aspect of Shiva, but probably goes back to a very ancient tradition; usually represented driving his chariot through the sky.

stambha Stone pillars most closely associated with Buddhism and Ashoka's edicts.

stupa Stone mounds which came to be associated with the relics of the Buddha, and later with the relics of famous followers of Buddha; marks a sacred place in Buddhism.
