About This Print
This print is one of fifty prints from the first part of the three part series One Hundred Victories, One Hundred Laughs. (Hyakusen hyakushô) created by the artist Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915), the writer Nishimori Takeki (1861-1923), alias Koppi Dōjin, and the publisher Matsuki Heikichi (1870-1931).
Kiyochika gives us a scene in the Dragon King’s palace, where a giant anchor has dropped to the seabed floor frightening him, his daughter and fish which try to flee. The anchor is from one of the Chinese battleships sunk by the Japanese navy in the battle of the Yellow Sea.
About The Series One Hundred Victories, One Hundred Laughs
This series One Hundred Victories, One Hundred Laughs was issued in three parts and presented parodies of the enemy, the Chinese in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 and ten years later the Russians in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. The first part of the series titled Long Live Japan: One Hundred Victories, One Hundred Laughs, consisting of fifty prints, was issued between September 1894 and August 1895. The second part of the series titled Magic Lantern Society: One Hundred Victories, One Hundred Laughs, consisting of twelve prints, was issued between November 1895 and December 1896. Both of these parts parodied (often in a racist manner) the Chinese people, leadership and war effort. The third and last part of the series, consisting of eight-six prints, used the same title as the first part Long Live Japan: One Hundred Victories, One Hundred Laughs. Ryūgū no sawagi (Uproar in the palace of the dragon king) by Koppi Dōjin
Zudōn, mirimiri-mirimiri, gabugabu-gabugabu terrible sounds can be heard and suddenly a big anchor falls down or the hold of a war ship sinks. If something like that happens, fine, but within one day four, five of them came down, zunzun, that's why everyone in the palace of the dragon king is scared stiff.
“That there could be an oar, I don't know about ship's parts. (This is a serious issue, no idea what's going on.). Ca-areful, ca-areful! (To the boats! To the boats!)
No, you don't make jokes about that.”
As they were worrying, Sashimi Magurō (sashimi made from tuna fish), Ushio Taisuke (saltwater porgy), Araino Kochita (arai from a small blenny), Kozakana Konoshirō (small allis shad) came over: “We were just in the area of Haiyangdao and a battle started there between war ships of the Greater Japanese Empire and some of the chanchan baldies (defamation for “Chinese”), and oh my gosh, how the chanchan baldies made fools of themselves! They totally ruined it and were brutally defeated. They even crushed four or five of their ships, the kind that can take a lot, ironclads or whatever they call them.”
So now princess Otohime is finally back in the picture. She says in relief: “So that's the way it is...oh dear. Japan is a strong country – no wonder that the ships of the Chinamen were sunk.”
Then Taisuke, who's a very clever fish, says, “Highness indignation (the anchor) is only too clear.”
