About This Print
Two Korean soldiers are seen fleeing the fighting as the Japanese Mixed Brigade under Major General Ōshima first surround the royal palace (Daewongun Palace or Gyeongbok Palace) in Hanseong, the Korean capital, and then force their way in, resulting in a firefight. The several hour long fight resulted in the Japanese taking control of the palace. On July 23, 1894, the Japanese army attacked the palace with the aim of toppling the Korean government and establishing a new regime under the Daewongun and removing Queen Min's pro-Chinese regime. This print, as opposed to almost all other Sino-Japanese War prints, was published in Ōsaka rather than in Tokyo. Its publisher Ōbuchi Wataru of the publishing house Hatsubai Shinshindō was primarily a book publisher and this print was part of a twelve print gafu (picture book), a portfolio titled Sino-Japanese War Picture Book, the envelope for which is shown below.
