About This Print
A depiction of the first major land battle of the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) , fought at end of July 1894 at Seonghwan and Asan, Korea. The Japanese were victorious in both battles, suffering 34 killed and 54 wounded soldiers, while the Chinese army suffered 500 killed and wounded. Following this battle on August 1, 1894 Japan and China would issue formal declarations of warThis print, as opposed to almost all other Sino-Japanese War prints, was published in Ōsaka rather than in Tokyo. Its publisher Ōbuchi Wataru of the publishing house Hatsubai Shinshindō was primarily a book publisher and this print was part of a twelve print gafu (picture book), a portfolio titled Sino-Japanese War Picture Book, the envelope for which is shown below.
