Letter to the Editor: Research support for the use of massage as a treatment modality.

The purpose of this editorial was to make mention of the common limitations within the research for sports massage. It has become more prominent in the world of competitive sports to utilize sports massage. Massage therapists, athletic trainer, physical therapists, physiotherapists, and athletic therapists all perform massage to prevent and treat athletic injuries even through scientific research has been unable to provide sufficient evidence to support the use of massage. The lack of strong methodology may provide one reason for lack of support for massage. The limitations in the methods used include lack of therapist training in massage, unsatisfactory duration of treatment time, insufficient number of subjects, and inconsistent use of specific massage strokes. Trends can be interpreted from the data that does support the use of massage in athletics
