Home Adapted ILDs

As you adapt to teaching online in this surreal time, I thought about how active learning could be preserved as part of our teaching.

(1) NEW: If you have access to demonstration equipment and can present demonstrations online to your students you can download the entire Interactive Lecture Demonstrations (ILD) book published by Wiley by clicking here. You have permission to use any of the 28 sets of interactive demonstrations with your students and distribute the Prediction and Results sheets as you wish. You can download Word files of these sheets by clicking here. If you are not familiar with ILDs, first read the ILD book's introduction.

(2) I am attempting to adapt a subset of our Interactive Lecture Demonstrations (ILDs) to a form that can be easily used by students at home. I am using pictures, videos and displays that I have along with easily available simulations to substitute for hands-on experiments. Unfortunately, I do not have access to my lab, so I must use media that I already have, as well as some of the wonderful Physlet and PhET simulations that are available for use. I have retained the important component of having students make predictions before their observations. Unfortunately, it will not be easy for many of us to incorporate small group or class discussions, so this is a severe compromise of the ILD protocol. You will need to impress your students with the importance of them really making predictions before they proceed with observations.

Of course, the efficacy of the ILDs in this form has not been research-validated.

I will add ILDs as I adapt them and include them below.

Please let me know about your experiences with any of these.
